About the Lab

Greetings!

Hearty welcome to the Ecosystems Laboratory (ESL) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Ulsan in the Republic of Korea. At ESL, we educate and inspire our students to become global environmental experts who can challenge environmental deterioration and lead key role in establishing global sustainable society.

In 1993, we started our laboratory as Environmental Pollution Control Laboratory (EPCL), with a thrust on fundamental and core areas of environmental pollution control. The primary focus were water, wastewater and waste air treatment using diverse biological treatment systems such as Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs), Upflow Multilayer Bio-Reactors (UMBR), and many other physico-chemical methods. However, the global environmental concerns such as climate change and acid rains, etc., give us a new challenging mission of contributing to sustainable development of the society. Currently we are trying to protect and improve the quality of the environment, considering the economic and social co-benefits by applying innovative thinking, new technologies and holistic approach of ecosystems issues.

Presently we are focusing on the various aspects of environmental technology and management encompassing resource recycling and cleaner production, development and promotion of existing industrial parks to Eco-industrial park (EIP) by linking the industries together to exchange by-products and wastes, and sharing of utility infrastructure to reduce their collective environmental footprint. We undertake environmental consulting and business model development activities too.

Today our laboratory has become one of the leading laboratories in Korea with excellent industry-academia collaboration wherein we strive to integrate both environmental technology and management principles for the sustainable development with the harmonious co-existence of nature and human beings.

We look forward to see you on our campus and let us contribute together for a better environment for present and future.
